NSW: Storm insurance claims swell to $200 million
SYDNEY, Dec 14 AAP - Insurance claims following Sunday's devastating storms in Sydney
have swollen to more than $200 million.
The council areas of Penrith, Blacktown, Baulkham Hills and Hornsby, in Sydney's west
and north, have been declared natural disaster zones by the NSW government after being
hammered by hail and gale-force winds.
"In the past 24 hours the estimated claims cost has increased to around $201 million,"
Insurance Council of Australia chief Kerrie Kelly said in a statement today.
"Approximately 33,500 claims have been received to date by the general insurance industry.
"Policy holders who have been affected by the recent storms, and who have not yet contacted
their insurer, should do so before carrying out major repair work and more importantly,
before contacting third parties to undertake any repairs."
Ms Kelly said insurance companies were responding to claims as quickly as possible
but that repairs would be completed depending on the availability of construction workers
and trade supplies.
