Qld: Calls for justice as Doomadgee laid to rest
The son of CAMERON DOOMADGEE yesterday led his 3,000-strong community in a funeral
march before they laid his father to rest, amid calls for justice over the death in custody
on Palm Island.
ERIC DOOMADGEE's father's death three weeks ago on the north Queensland island has
become a catalyst for nationwide protests calling for deaths in custody to end after 300
islanders rioted.
The streets of the island emptied yesterday as hundreds of mourners converged on a
church in the foot of the island hills to bid farewell to the islander they describe as
a humble martyr.
Aboriginal leader MURRANDOO YANNER led a procession carrying the Aboriginal flag down
the same street on which rioters had pelted rocks at police two weeks ago as they burnt
down the police station, barracks and court house.
A second autopsy report into Mr DOOMADGEE'S death is yet to be released.
