Fed: Govt, opposition trade claims on Telstra

The federal government and the opposition continue to trade claims on why Telstra should
or should not be fully privatised.

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD has warned that continued government control is restricting
Telstra, despite its $5 billion Hong Kong technology deal.

The telecommunications giant took its first major step overseas earlier this week,
announcing a $5 billion alliance with Hong Kong Internet giant Pacific Century CyberWorks.

Opposition Leader KIM BEAZLEY says taxpayers have already lost $1 billion from the
part-sale of Telstra and they stand to lose another $1 billion if the rest is sold.

Telstra shares recovered slightly yesterday after slumping 23 cents on news of the
Hong Kong deal.

Mr HOWARD insists the deal doesn't undermine government claims its 50.1 per cent share
is constricting Telstra.
