LET THE TRAVELER BEWARE IN SPAIN.(Travel)

In the past 12 months, at least a half dozen travelers have written or phoned The Washington Post complaining they were recent victims of street crime in Spain - not an especially alarming number, but more than for any other country. This year, Spain is expecting to attract thousands of American visitors to the Summer Olympics in Barcelona and a world's fair in Seville, and personal safety is an aspect of the trip that must be considered.

In October, I took a two-week, 1,125-mile sightseeing drive through Spain and - briefly - Portugal. In all honesty, the worst problem I encountered was trying to figure out how to get my stick-shift rental car in reverse. I expect the overwhelming majority of travelers will have no more than that to fear.

And yet I sensed - with no definite proof - that I escaped becoming a victim on at least two occasions because I knew what to expect. And I did overhear the sad tale of one U.S. couple whose luggage was stolen from their parked car. …
